Fancy Pull-quotes (v0.85)

Installation.
Simply download the plugin, unzip it and copy the php file in the plugin directory of your wordpress installation. Then activate it from the admin panel and you are ready to go. The plugin is fully customizable from a page in the admin control panel.Note: if you are upgrading the plugin from an older version I recommend to first click the “restore all options to default” link.

How to use.
Simply surround the text that you want to see as pull-quote by the following tags: <!--pull--> and <!--/pull-->. The plugin will automatically scan your post for the text included with these tags and treat it as pull-quotes. Getting those nice effects is as easy as that! If you don’t like the tags as they are or if you want to change the look of the pulled quote, you can do it from the control page in the admin panel of wordpress. The quote is formatted using a CSS definition: if you are an advanced user (i.e. if you know a bit of CSS) you can hack the CSS style in every part.

Detailed instruction.

Open and Close tags: you can define which tag to be used as markers for the pulled quote. Default are <!–pull–> and <!–/pull–>. These tags are transparent by default meaning that if you check the “Mirror quote” option you can activate or inactivate the plugin at any time without changing the layout of your posts.

Background Color: Choose background color. Use same color as your normal background to make it transparent.

Text Color: Choose text color. You can use hexadecimal values (for instance: #0AFF44)

Max Width: specifies the maximal width allowed

Pullquote position: pullquote position in the page (left or right)

Border color, size, style: define border properties

Mirror quote: leave unchecked if you want to use a quote that won’t show in the text of your post (for instance: if you want to have the pullquote to appear at the very top of your post you can uncheck the “mirror quote” checkbox and insert the pulled quoted as first thing in your wordpress post)

Version.
Current version of the plugin is 0.85, released on 4.19.2007. The plugin has been tested and working WP 2.0.x and 2.1.x. If you have other experience on other versions of WP please leave a comment here and I’ll udate this paragraph.

License.
The plug-in is released under GPL license, meaning it’s free. If you like it or if you need help feel free to leave a comment here. (did you note that I installed some ads on this page? maybe you can find a couple of minute to check if there is anything interesting to you…)
Take a look also to my other plugin, Alt-to-Legend.

Enjoy!

Pretty neat plugin that adds a nice effect. Anyway to have the pulled quote placed somewhere other than inline with the original paragraph? For example, in this post (http://isaiahsix.org/blog/2006/10/what-do-you-do-when/), the pulled quote is close to the bottom of the post, and the floating quote is inline. It would be nice if the added quote could float upward in the post. When magazines use this technique, the floating quote doesn’t necessarily appear inline with the originating paragraph.
Maybe I’m too picky; this really is a cool plugin.

Won’t the tags (pull) and (/pull) cause some problems if the plugin is deactivated ? They will appear on the post…

    Hi —
There is a similar plugin here:
http://www.striderweb.com/nerdaphernalia/features/wp-javascript-pull-quotes/ It does not double-up text as this one does if turned off. Also there is an options panel with some user-changeable prefs (alternating sides, choose side, remove links within quotes, alternate text in a quote, more coming)
Competition is a good thing I think. 🙂 Different plugins can learn from each other.
(Disclaimer: Yes, this is my own plugin I’m… err… plugging.)

err… never mind about my “doubling up text” comment above. I misread a bit. Anyway, the other one simply disappears if turned off.

Just a question though, what would happen to my post or how would it look like if I deactivate the plugin from the plugins manager? will my posts still contain those “(pull)” and “(/pull)” tags. I’m just worried because it’s not like the “” or the “ tags. Thanks!

I do need the mirror button checked, I want the text to be kept in place, and have a pullquote.
I just want the pullquote not display next to the part where the original text was, but always on the top right part of the post… so the reader sees the pullquote, some text of the post, then comes my read more link, where he can click to read the whole article….

I think this is just about positioning with css not specifically about your plugin….

The quotes look nice, but a true “pull quote” would leave the text in its original location as well. With your plugin, if I pull a quote out of the middle of a paragraph, then the paragraph no longer makes sense because it is missing text. And if I put in the sentence twice, then it is messing it up for the feedreaders.

Until that’s fixed, this plugin is not useful for real pull quotes.

[Giorgio says:there is a checkbox in the option page called “Mirror quote”. If you check that true your pullquote will be then”copied” from the original paragraph.]

I really, really want this plugin to work for me! It’s fantastic, but there is only one thing that’s keeping me from using it right now – and hopefully you can explain if there is a fix.

I need to have my pullquote appear at the top left or right of the post, just like ovidiu was saying above, but I also need for it to work with the tag. There is no way to test to see if the pullquote will appear on the main page if the code is placed around text under the tag – know what I mean? Is this something that has been thought of?

[giorgio says: I am not sure I know what you mean. The pullquote will appear wherever your tag are. You could try to change that modifying the CSS or putting the pullquote as first thing in your post]

This plugin works in WordPress 2.7 Beta 2. Just make sure that you add the pull tags in the html editor and not the WYSIWYG editor. However, it appears that once you’ve put in the pull tags it doesn’t matter what editor you use if you go back to change anything.
